Salesforce describes Zero Copy as an integration method that lets organizations access data across multiple repositories without first moving, duplicating or reformatting it through a conventional ETL or reverse-ETL pipeline.

External data can remain in platforms such as data warehouses and lakehouses while Salesforce Data 360 connects it to a metadata framework. The information can then support analytics, unified customer views, segmentation, automation, personalization and AI-powered applications.

The essential meaning: “Zero Copy” does not mean zero data. It means that the primary data can remain at its source while another platform receives controlled, virtual or query-based access.

The decisive difference: movement versus use

Salesforce Zero Copy primarily changes how data is connected. It reduces the need to move and duplicate complete datasets before they can be used.

ZDP changes which data is allowed to exist and what can be done with it. Even a perfect live query can conflict with ZDP if it exposes unnecessary identifiers, supports unrelated profiling or generates persistent derived information.

In one sentence: Zero Copy keeps data in place; Zero Data Protocol keeps unnecessary data out of the architecture.

A ZDP-oriented Zero Copy checklist

  1. Minimize selected objects and fields. Do not expose an entire warehouse when the function requires only a narrow attribute.
  2. Separate identity from context. Determine whether a query truly needs names, contact details or a universal customer identifier.
  3. Prefer live access where appropriate. Avoid caches and incremental copies when the source can safely answer the request directly.
  4. Map derived information. Include segments, calculated insights, scores, unified profiles, embeddings and agent memories.
  5. Limit activation purposes. Access for support must not silently become permission for advertising, training or unrelated personalization.
  6. Apply source-level access controls. Keep least-privilege rules close to the authoritative data store.
  7. Define revocation and deletion. Removing a connection should also address cached, harmonized and derived information.
